Wrexham FC was founded in 1872 and are nicknamed The Dragons; they are one of the oldest football clubs in Britain and the oldest professional club in Wales.
Despite playing in the English leagues, Wrexham have won the Welsh Cup a record 23 times qualifying for European competition on many occasions. In 1975–76 Wrexham reached the quarter finals of the European Cup-Winners Cup where they narrowly lost 2–1 to Belgian giants, and eventual winners, Anderlecht. The Dragons have also enjoyed European ties with the likes of Manchester United, Real Zaragoza, Porto and AS Roma (who were then managed by Sven-Goran Eriksson and featured Carlo Ancelotti in their line-up).
At the end of the 2007–08 season, and after 87 years of consecutive years of top flight football, the club was relegated from the Football League. Wrexham's home stadium, The Racecourse Ground, is the world's oldest international stadium that still continues to host international games.
