Watford FC was founded in 1881 as Watford Rovers; they are nicknamed The Hornets, The Horns and The 'Orns. Watford joined the Football League in 1920 and moved to their current home, Vicarage Road in 1922.

The Hornets enjoyed a remarkable period from 1977 to 1987 under the management of Graham Taylor and Chairmanship of Elton John. During this time Watford rose to the old First Division from the Fourth Division, finished runners-up in First Division in 1983, competed in the UEFA Cup in the 1983–84 season, and reached the FA Cup final in 1984, where they lost to Everton

Former England manager, Graham Taylor returned in the late 1990s and took The Hornets from the third tier of English football to the Premier League in successive seasons.
