Shrewsbury Town FC was formed in 1886 at the Turf Hotel in Claremont Hill, Shrewsbury. This followed the demise of Shropshire Wanderers and (later) Castle Blues. The club has several nicknames including Salop, The Shrews, The Blues and simply “Townâ€. They currently play at the Greenhous Meadow having left Gay Meadow, their home for 97 years, in 2007.
Shrewsbury Town enjoyed some great times in the late 1970s and early 1980s, reaching the FA Cup Quarter Finals in 1979 and 1982. The Shrew’s 1982 FA Cup fifth-round game was a remarkable achievement, beating UEFA Cup holders Ipswich Town (then one of Europe's top teams) 2-1 with goals from Steve Cross and Jake King.
