Sheffield United was formed in 1889 - surprisingly by the President of Sheffield Wednesday FC, Sir Charles Clegg. Wednesday had moved from Bramall Lane and the owners of the ground needed to create a new football team to generate income. Sheffield United still play at Bramall Lane.

Sheffield United are nicknamed 'The Blades', a reference to the city of Sheffield's worldwide reputation for steel production; they were the first sporting team to in the world use the name United.

Undoubtedly Sheffield United's heyday was the 40-year period from 1895–1925, when The Blades were English Champions in 1898 and FA Cup winners in 1899, 1902, 1915 and 1925; they were also FA Cup runners-up in 1901 and 1936.
