AS Roma was founded in the summer of 1927 with the government-ordered merger of three clubs: Roman FC, SS Alba-Audace and Fortitudo-Pro Roma. The merger was intended to give the Eternal City a strong club to rival the northern giants of Milan and Turin. The only major Roman club to resist the merger was SS Lazio who apparently had connections in high places - both in government and in the Italian Football Federation.
Unsurprisingly AS Roma’s biggest rivalry is with SS Lazio with whom they now share the Stadio Olimpico. The derby between the two is called the Derby della Capitale and is one of the most heated and emotional footballing rivalries in the world. Roma also competes with southern neighbours Napoli in the "Derby del Sole" (in English Derby of the Sun).
AS Roma's claret and gold colours are the traditional colours of the Eternal City - the official seal of the Comune di Roma is in the same colours. The club has won many trophies including three Serie A titles and the Coppa Italia on nine occasions. Roma came very close to being European Champions in 1984 narrowly losing the final against Liverpool on a penalty shootout.
