RKC is based in the town of Waalwijk in the southern Netherlands; this small town has a population of less than 40,000 but manages to host a football team in the Eredivisie. RKC is traditionally seen as one of Holland’s smaller teams yet, despite having a stadium capacity of just 7,500, the club has maintained its top-flight status for many years.
RKC was founded in 1940 through a merger of three Roman Catholic football teams in the town – HEC, WVB and Hercules. The name RKC stands for Rooms Katholieke Combinatie which means Roman Catholic Combination.
