Most successful club team in the world? Manchester United with 20 domestic titles? Juventus with 29? How about Real Madrid with 32? No – try Glasgow Rangers with 54.

Yes 54 domestic titles – more than any other club in the world. And you can add to that 33 Scottish Cup wins, 27 Scottish League Cup wins and the 1972 European Cup-Winners Cup.

No wonder then that the Gers are one of the best supported clubs in Europe – their crowds are consistently in the top twenty highest attendances of European clubs. Rangers have over 150 supporters clubs in Britain and another 95 across the world.

There’s only word for a team with that history – giants.

Other records? Too many to cover here but how about the highest attendance for a British league fixture ever – 118,657 at home to Celtic on January 2nd 1939; the first British club to reach a European final (the European Cup-Winners' Cup in 1961) and the world record gate for a fourth tier match – 49,463 at home to Queens Park on October 20th 2012.

Fourth tier? One of the biggest clubs in the world? It's a long story...

Rangers experienced financial difficulties during the late 2000s and went into administration in February 2012. One of the major creditors – HMRC – refused to allow the club to exit administration via a Company Voluntary Arrangement (CVA) and the Gers entered liquidation in October 2012.

The refusal of the CVA forced the administrators to sell the business and assets of Rangers to a new company. The other member clubs of the Scottish Premier League refused to allow the new company to adopt the league membership of the old company.

The club then successfully applied for membership of the Scottish Football League. After obtaining the Scottish Football Association membership of the old company, Rangers (now trading as The Rangers Football Club Ltd) entered the Third Division (the fourth tier of the Scottish football league system) in time for the 2012–13 season.
