Port Vale FC was formed in 1876 at a meeting in the Port Vale House, from where the club took its name. Port Vale is one of the few English league clubs not to be named after a city or town.

They are nicknamed The Valiants or The Vale and play at Vale Park in Burslem — one of the six towns that make up the city of Stoke-on-Trent.  The club's main rivals are Stoke City and games between the two clubs are known as the Potteries derby.

Port Vale’s most successful period was in the 1950s when The Valiants won the Fourth Division and Third Division titles and reached the FA Cup semi–final in 1954. Vale have played more seasons in the second tier of English football (forty one to date) than any other club who have never reached the top tier.
