Otley? No not Dick Dastardly’s canine sidekick... it’s a pretty market town in West Yorkshire and one that Olympic silver medallist Lizzie Armitstead calls home. As does former England Rugby Captain and royal-squeeze Mike Tindall.

This delightful place is a thousand years-old and the town was recorded in the Doomsday Book back in 1086 – variously as Ottanlege, Otelai or Othelia. Otley has a rather good indie band called The Chevin, is often mentioned in Emmerdale and (apparently) ITV’s hit 1990s TV series Heartbeat was filmed there.

It’s also home to Otley Town which plays in the West Yorkshire Premier League, these days a Step 7 league which feeds into the North East Counties League.

Otley Town is one of the oldest amateur football clubs in the country tracing its roots back to the 1930s – the current club was formed by a merger of Dawson-Payne & Elliot FC and Otley FC in 1972.

The team has had a brilliant time recently; in 2012 the first team won the District Cup for the third consecutive year and they also managed an impressive fourth place in the league. Otley Town’s Club President is Bill Lumsden who we understand can these days be spotted wearing an Appleberry Otley Town scarf. Cheers Bill!
