Northampton Town FC was founded in 1897; they are nicknamed The Cobblers, a reference to the traditional shoemaking industry in and around Northampton.
The Cobblers were granted permission to play home matches at the County Ground, home of Northamptonshire County Cricket Club, provided that no games were scheduled between May and September. This was to remain their home for the next 97 years until they moved to the 7,653 capacity all-seater Sixfields Stadium in 1994.
Northampton Town hold the record for the shortest time taken to be promoted from the bottom tier to the top tier and relegated back down to the bottom again, in the space of nine years. The Cobblers played their only season in the top division of English football when they reached the First Division in 1965–66.
