For decades the town of Motherwell was the centre of the British steel industry. The town was home to Ravenscraig – one of the world’s biggest steelworks until it was closed. The town was called Steelopolis and the football team inevitably became known as The Steelmen.

A year before Ravenscraig closed Motherwell Football Club won its last trophy – beating Dundee United 4-3 in the 1991 Scottish Cup Final.

The Steelmen’s glory years were the 1920s and 1930s. Motherwell were Scottish champions in 1932 winning 30 of their 38 games and breaking a twenty-eight year period of Old Firm domination. Motherwell finished in second place in 1934 and 1935 and also reached the Scottish Cup final in 1931, 1933 and 1939.

For an industrial town Motherwell seems to be quite a cultured place. Opera singer, Anne Sharp, is a local; as was Alexander Gibson (former Conductor of the Royal Scottish National Orchestra) as well as one of our fave indie bands – the fabulous Delgados!
