Grimsby Town FC was formed in 1878 as Grimsby Pelham and later became Grimsby Town. The club plays at Blundell Park – their home since 1898. They are nicknamed The Mariners.
In their long history Grimsby have played in all five top five divisions of English football – one of only four clubs to have done so. In 1934-35 The Mariners finished fifth in the Football League Division One having finished as Champions of Division Two the previous year.
Notable former managers include the late Bill Shankly, who went on to guide Liverpool
to great domestic and European success, and Lawrie McMenemy who, after securing promotion to the then third division in 1972, moved to Southampton
where he won the FA Cup in 1976.
