Feyenoord Rotterdam was founded in 1908 (in a pub named De Vereeniging) in 1908. The club was originally called Wilhelmina and changed its name SC Feijenoord in 1912 as it was located in the Feijenoord district of southern Rotterdam. In 1974 the name was changed again to Feyenoord because foreign supporters unfamiliar with the Dutch language did not know how to pronounce ij.
The club is one of the big three teams that dominate Dutch football, the others being Ajax and PSV. These three giants are the only clubs to have played every season Eredivisie since it was created in 1952. Feyenoord is one of the most successful clubs in the Netherlands and was the first Dutch side to be champions of Europe – winning the competition in 1970.
Feyenoord is known as the people's club; its legendary fans are nicknamed Het Legioen (The Legion). The squad number 12 is never given to a player, but is reserved for Het Legioen instead.
The club’s main rivalry is with Ajax Amsterdam; the clash between the two biggest clubs in the Netherlands, from the two biggest (but culturally very different) cities in the country is called De Klassieker (The Classic).
