Until the 1980s United were the smaller and less successful of the two Dundee-based football clubs. That was until United poached coach Jim McLean from neighbours Dundee.

McLean took over in 1971 and his Dundee United reached the Scottish Cup final in 1974. This was followed a top-three finish in 1978 and again in 1979, before The Arabs won the Scottish League Cup in 1980 and retained the trophy in the following season.

United’s greatest achievement was in winning the Scottish Premier Division title for the first time in the club's history in 1983.

The following season McLean’s young Dundee United team reached the semi-finals of the European Cup narrowly losing to Italian giants AS Roma. The Arabs won the first leg 2–0 but lost 3–0 in the second leg. Could they have gone further? Probably – it turned out that Roma had “attempted” to bribe the referee and the Italians were fined and suspended from European football for a year.

McLean did eventually get to a European final. In 1987 The Arabs became the first Scottish club to reach the UEFA Cup Final beating Terry Venables’ Barcelona side home and away en-route, before losing to IFK Gothenburg in the two-legged final.
