Long before Bill Shankly’s Liverpool were to dominate European football, Dundee were pioneering British involvement under the leadership of Bill’s older brother Bob Shankly.

The former miner was appointed manager of Dundee in 1959; three years later they were Scottish Champions. The team included several Scottish internationals including Alan Gilzean and Ian Ure who both moved on to play in north London for Spurs and Arsenal respectively.

A year later Bob Shankly’s Dundee side reached the European Cup semi-final beating FC Cologne, Sporting Lisbon and Anderlecht on the way before losing to AC Milan at the final hurdle.

Shankly moved on in 1965 and the club’s golden era drew to a close.
