Charlton Athletic FC was founded in June 1905, when a number of youth clubs in the southeast London area, including East Street Mission and Blundell Mission, combined to form Charlton Athletic FC. The club plays at The Valley and is nicknamed The Addicks.

Charlton Athletic turned professional in 1920 and joined the Football League in 1921. Since then they have had four separate periods in the top flight of English football. Historically, The Addicks’ most successful period was the 1930s, when their highest league finishes were recorded, including a second place finish in 1937.

After World War Two the club reached the FA Cup final twice, losing to Derby County in 1946 and beating Burnley to win the FA Cup in 1947.
