The club enjoyed great success in the early 1990s under the management of John Beck winning the first ever play-off final at Wembley Stadium, gaining promotion from the Fourth Division, reaching two successive FA Cup quarter finals in 1990 and 1991, winning the Third Division in 1991 and reaching the Division Two pay-offs in 1992.
After 35 years in the Football League Cambridge United were relegated to the Football Conference in 2005.
