Bury FC was formed in 1885 following a meeting between the Bury Wesleyans and Bury Unitarians Football Clubs. The club plays at Gigg Lane; the first game at the ground took place in September 1885 when Bury won a friendly match 4-3 against Wigan.
The club's nickname is The Shakers which was bequeathed by Chairman JT Ingham in the late 1890s.
Bury FC have won the FA Cup twice, the first being a 4-0 victory over Southampton
in the 1900 final at Crystal Palace. In 1903 the club’s second FA Cup win was achieved without conceding a goal in the entire competition. In the 1903 final, again at Crystal Palace, Bury beat Derby County
6-0 – which remains the highest ever victory in an FA Cup Final.
