Bristol Rovers was founded in 1883 as Black Arabs FC, and was later known as Eastville Rovers and Bristol Eastville Rovers before finally changing its name to Bristol Rovers in 1898. The club's official nickname is The Pirates.

Rovers joined the Football League in 1920 and have been there ever since. The clubs best seasons were 1956 and 1959 when on both occasions Rovers finished sixth in Division Two – today’s Championship.

They have reached the final of the Football League Trophy on two occasions – 1990 and 2007 - but finished runners-up on both occasions.
