Ajax was founded in Amsterdam in 1900 and is comfortably the most successful club in Holland. The Amsterdammers have been Champions of Holland more times than any other club; add to that four European Cups/Champions Leagues, 1 Cup Winners Cup and 1 UEFA Cup (now the Europa League) and you see that we’re talking about one of the biggest teams in the world.
Ajax is world famous for its youth development which has produced so much footballing talent – including in recent times Dennis Bergkamp, Marco van Basten, Edwin van der Sar, Patrick Kluivert and Wesley Sneijder. Back in the 1970s the names were as well known as John, Paul, George and Ringo - Ruud Krol, Arnie Muhren, Johan Neeskens, Johnny Rep and of course the incomparable Johan Cruyff.
Led by Cruyff, Ajax were champions of Europe for three consecutive years (1971, 1972 & 1973) and in 1972 completed an unprecedented treble by also winning the Dutch Eredivisie and KNVB Cup. Cruyff is regarded by many as the greatest player Europe has ever produced – and we’re not arguing. Ajax actually ‘retired’ his famous Number 14 shirt in 2007, the great man himself simply laughed at the tribute.
