AFC Wimbledon was founded by supporters of Wimbledon Football Club (led by Kris Stewart) in June 2002. Days earlier, the Football Association had agreed to allow Wimbledon FC to relocate 56 miles north to Milton Keynes. This was unprecedented in English football – the move ended all ties the club had with Wimbledon and traditional support dried up immediately in protest.
After the move north the football authorities allowed the old club to change their identity to MK Dons.
The new AFC Wimbledon started life in the Combined Counties League; eight years later the club won promotion to the Football League for the first time by beating Luton Town in the Football Conference play-off final. Known as The Dons, The Wombles or The Crazy Gang, AFC Wimbledon now play at Kingsmeadow in Kingston-upon-Thames.
